Praise
- While most driving games focus on racing, there's far more to do with a vehicle than just go fast in it. Over the Hill removes all timers and all pressure, leaving the player to decide how they want to approach its goals. Going sightseeing on an easy drive is more than acceptable, and every bit as valid as clearing every question mark on the map while seeing if you can muscle your favorite car onto ledges where it really doesn't seem like it should be able to go. Both extremes and any point in the middle will deliver a wonderfully chill driving experience, with a relaxing soundtrack backed up by wind and various animal calls adding to the pleasantly lonely vibes. Over the Hill is a game where its setting is as important as the car's mechanics, getting both right to create a fantastic driving experience into whatever outdoor adventure you feel like chasing after over its sprawling, open wilderness.
- Over the hill is a relaxing wind-down from the 500mph sprint that we call life, offering a little oasis of calm that's the perfect respite from the horrors of modern existence.
- The Runner series is amongst my favourite driving games of all time, and over the hill is a unique take in the same spirit as those games. Its cosy, calming outlook and laidback vibes could have felt out of place, but this is an adventure game, in the truest sense of the word.
Criticism
- over the hill certainly delivers a relaxing offroad experience at times, and kept drawing me back to explore the exciting scenery. With no broad goals and massive environments, the game promises to keep you entertained for as long as you see fit. However, frustrating driving and some significant technical issues will stop me for returning to over the hill for quite some time.
- While some players may find plenty of enjoyment in over the hill, its multiplayer adds little to the experience. The game looks peaceful, its simplistic art style is charming and the soundtrack fits the intended atmosphere, but frustrating exploration and underwhelming rewards quickly ruin that sense of tranquillity. Bumper Christmas lights are pretty funny, but not when you’ve tumbled down a hill thirty-seven times just to get them.
