Tenebris Somnia

Tenebris Somnia is a survival horror adventure game in the same vein as classics like Silent Hill or Resident Evil - but adapted to a retro 2D aesthetic from the 8 or 16-bit era. You will struggle to survive while solving puzzles and fighting horrible creatures. Yet the secrets of the game lie within its cinematics... When you reach certain key points you will see sequences from a completely different point of view, made in live action with real actors and practical effects - created by a professional and award winning film crew from Argentina.

Praise

  • Tenebris Somnia recaptures the forgotten classic feel of the survival horror genre and reminded me why it is still foundational to contemporary greats.
  • It's difficult to make a pixelated 8-bit game scary, but that hasn't stopped Tenebris Somnia from trying. With Tobías Rusjan's creative brain and Andrés Borghi's eye for cinematography combined, Saibot Studios has managed to deliver a compelling retro horror adventure, complimented by some stellar FMV cutscenes. The only things keeping me awake at night were the clunky controls and the huge difficulty spikes in bossfights, throwing a somewhat damp blanket on an otherwise ingeniously designed experience.
  • Tenebris Somnia excels when it uses its fantastic horror movie sections to carry the story forward and reference in-game events. It does less well when it comes to the game’s often-obtuse puzzles and occasionally clumsy combat. Play it for the high production values of the FMV side, and stay for the deep story that pays tribute to filmmaking.
