What critics said

Praise

  • The emotional characters and story in Tales of Eternia still stand up to the test of time, and shine better than ever thanks to the revamped localisation in this remaster. And while the combat isn't quite able to keep up, the slew of new accessibility features do a lot of heavy lifting to make it more palatable for the modern age. If you go into Tales of Eternia Remastered with an open mind, ready to appreciate its nostalgic value, then there’s a lot to love about this faithful update of the classic PlayStation RPG.
  • Tales of Eternia Remastered brings back a classic 2D Tales adventure, restoring exclusive content cut from prior North American releases, made complete with some choice QoL improvements for modern audiences.

Criticism

  • I’m so happy Bandai Namco finally released Tales of Eternia Remastered. It’s the first of the series’ 2D games to be brought to modern consoles. It’s also one of the games modern Tales fans really haven’t had any access to. I really loved playing through it again. The combat system will appeal to action JRPG fans, as well as fans of 2D fighting games. But the adventuring, dialogue, and pacing are full of JRPG bad habits that modern players have grown tired of. If you’re a Tales fan and/ or a retro JRPG fan, Tales of Eternia Remastered is a must-play.

Mixed

  • Tales of Eternia Remastered successfully brings Bandai Namco’s classic JRPG into the modern era, offering newcomers an ideal entry point to a 2000s gem. Driven by a charming narrative across the twin worlds of Inferia and Celestia, the adventure shines thanks to a dynamic 2D real-time combat system that has aged remarkably well. Thanks to a clean visual overhaul at 60 fps and crucial QOL additions (such as destination markers, adjustable encounter rates, and speed options) the frustrating friction of classic retrogaming is effectively smoothed out, delivering a deeply entertaining and polished classic.
