- While of course I was hoping for a perfect experience, I’m not upset that Montabi has some minor blemishes. Because this is a very successful hybrid monster catcher, which is a rare feat, it’s also a game I’ve been utterly unable to put down for a couple of weeks now, even when I know I should be playing other games. If you’re a fan of the genre and want to try something fresh and engaging, look no further.
- A melding of concepts and styles from monster trainers, deckbuilders, and tactical strategy titles packed into a new package that works well overall.
- Montabi was a delightful surprise. When I realized I had to deal with another roguelike deckbuilder, my heart sank. Thankfully its strong game design and strategic approach to the genre kept me coming back again and again. I think that this game lays out a strong foundation to improve upon, especially in giving its titular creatures a more defined personality and broadening the tactical synergies between them. The story, music and characters aren’t anything to write home about. Yet in the end I still had a pretty great time with Montabi. Its gameplay loop feels like the right fit for a Roguelike game. While I still stand by the fact that I’m over these types of games, Montabi deserves its spot among some of the best this genre has to offer.
