Praise

  • Fantastic little "metroidbrania" with very clever puzzles and secrets. Pretty amazing to design a game where everything is completely open to you, and its just a matter of learning the secrets!

Criticism

  • The game is ugly as hell. The art style and animations are hideous and unbearable to look at. The animations look like they're from Adobe Flash games from the 2000s. It's a game with no personality, probably thrown together by teenage developers using AI. It feels cheap and hollow, like it's made of paper and empty on the inside.

Praise

  • Echo Weaver is a very compelling concept for a Metroidvania, and presents some truly great gameplay ideas that I don’t think I’ve seen before. It’s a melding of various mechanics and while some of the resulting design choices make the game stumble just short of reaching excellence, the overall experience is one I can still see echoing in my brain for a long time to come.
  • Echo Weaver’s unique approach to the Metroid structure is admirable, unique, and well executed. The sense of discovery is fantastic, and though I realistically probably won’t immediately play the game again, the idea that I could start with knowledge of basically all of the abilities to rip through the game at high speed is an enticing one. Developer Moonlight Kids puts a lot of trust in the player to figure out how it all works, and the reward is palpable. That trust leads to some frustrated, aimless wandering, and the platforming challenges occasionally venture into feeling unfair, but by the end you will feel like a genius. That’s a good feeling to leave a game with.
  • Echo Weaver is a thrilling metroidbrainia that turns knowledge into progression, combining a tightly designed time loop with expressive platforming, rewarding exploration, and an engrossing mystery. Its abilities continually recontextualize the world and encourage experimentation, making repeat playthroughs especially compelling. A few minor progression quirks and the strict loop timer may not work for everyone, but Moonlight Kids delivers an inventive and deeply satisfying take on the metroidvania formula.

Criticism

  • Echo Weaver is a bold take on the Metroidvania formula: a tightly constructed adventure that wholeheartedly commits to familiar science fiction elements and, in the process, makes them its own. Endlessly creative, sometimes frustrating, but always ingenious, it will worm its way into your brain and won’t let you go until you’re satisfied you’ve done everything it will let you. My advice is to play it today, with a few hours set aside for the first of several sessions that you’ll likely spend before you see and do everything. You’ll probably want them.
